WWF Officials Track Narwhals By Satellite in Canada

WWF charity officials have managed to attach satellite tags to 7 Narwhals in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. The Narwhal, is an impressive whale which features a long white tusk that extends from it’s upper jaw, a bit like the mythical Unicorn!

A 15 strong crew from WWF Canada have painlessly fitted the tags to help track the movements of these amazing creatures during their annual feeding and reproductive routines. This will help them better understand these whales, as they may become vulnerable soon due to their specialised diet and being hunted by humans.

Narwhals can weigh over 3,000lbs and feature a mottled black and white pattern pigmentation. They can also make some of the deepest dives ever recorded, reaching depths of nearly 3,000 feet.

Let’s hope that through satellite tagging, WWF researchers can learn more about these fascinating creatures and help ensure that they don’t slip into the endangered territory that so many of the world’s most amazing creatures have.
