WWF Fighting to Save Indonesian Rainforest
America and Indonesia have joined forces with the WWF charity to raise a whopping $28.5 million in funding to help protect a region known as the Heart of Borneo, a forest area in Indonesia that is rich with wildlife. The area itself is an important source for securing carbon, and is also used by the local communities to provide jobs and firewood.
WWF is working hand in hand with The Nature Conservancy and the two countries governments to develop a new financing approach to conservation. With Indonesia currently owing the U.S. $28.5 million, government officials have agreed to swap the debt for investment in three Heart of Borneo forest districts. This innovative initiative will raise much needed funds to help WWF to convert degraded land into palm oil plantations, and protect the remaining natural forest. It will also allow two National Parks to be connected, thus providing Orangutans and other indigenous wildlife more freedom to roam.
This debt swap is a fantastic idea, and hopefully more countries across the globe will look into the benefits of helping other conservation projects in this manner.
