Prince Charles Hands Out Conservation Awards in Tanzania

WWF UK President, Prince Charles, has presented five Tanzanian community leaders with the ‘WWF Leaders for a Living Planet’ awards for their hard work in helping the natural world via sustainable development. The Prince of Wales, who has been invited to Tanzania by President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, was pleased to hand out the awards to the five for their amazing work at WWF-Tanzania’s RUMAKI Seascape programme.

Prince Charles, said –

I have spent 26 years building partnerships between NGO’s, the private sector and governments. Challenges confront us in an alarming way but it is important for us to pay attention to local knowledge and wisdom in dealing with these challenges. I am pleased to be able to recognise the efforts of communities in conservation.

Over 20 million people live along the East African shoreline, with this number expected to double by 2030. This would put increasing strain on the small amount of natural resources currently available in the area. The sustained efforts of these five community leaders will help ensure a lasting solution, as their survival depends on the continued existence of these natural resources.

WWF-Tanzania Country Director, Stephen Mariki, said –

From July 2005, to date, we have tirelessly worked in and with communities in Rufiji, Mafia Island and Kilwa to improve their well-being by helping them manage their fisheries and other natural resources. Today, we take time to celebrate with our communities and appreciate their conservation achievements. We are happy for the communities in Rufiji Delta, Mafia Island and Kilwa District for the great strides that they have made in achieving key conservation outcomes while improving their wellbeing. We urge our communities in East Africa to be actively engaged in mainstreaming conservation into all the programmes and projects they run in order to secure the future livelihoods of our children and build an environment in which human beings and nature live in harmony.
