Earth Day

This year marks 52 years since Earth Day first began. Earth Day is an opportunity for people all over the world to celebrate our planet and raise awareness for climate issues. All around the world different events take place to promote climate action and encourage everyone to protect the planet.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day takes place on the 22nd of April every year. In years gone by it has been a date on which people have taken part in climate marches, protests, and organised clean ups, all in a bid to highlight that we need to take better care of our planet.

Started in America

The first ever Earth Day was held in America in 1970 when 20 million people took to the streets to protest environmental issues. The intention for those that took part was to get more attention from governments on climate change issues that were threatening the planet such as pollution of our rivers and oceans and air pollution.

The first Earth Day was a success in so much as it led to people in power taking notice and passing new environmental laws in America. Thereafter other countries followed suit and passed similar laws. Earth Day contributed hugely to sparking the great environmental movement that we have today, and which is so vital to the survival of our planet.

Earth Day theme

Each year Earth Day’s organisers decide on a theme for the events. This year the theme is ‘Invest in our Planet’, which aims to encourage people, businesses, and governments to work together and take responsibility for the Earth and help make a difference.
